CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — A WJAR viewer in Rhode Island received a sales tax refund this week, she noticed some curious signatories at the bottom of the check: Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney.
"As a result of a technical error in the Division of Taxation's automated refund check printing system, approximately 176 checks with invalid signature lines were printed and mailed to taxpayers on Monday 7/27/2020. The invalid signature lines were incorrectly sourced from the Division’s test print files," said Jade Borgeson, Chief of Staff for the Department of Revenue.
The checks were related to various business taxes, including sales tax, corporate and tax credit refunds. The majority were corporation tax refunds.
The Department of Revenue told the WJAR investigative team it is reaching out to impacted taxpayers and apologized for any inconvenience the error caused.
Taxpayers who received a misprinted check can reach Taxation by phone 401-574-8829, option 3, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Corrected checks will be mailed within one week.
