SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - After being bombarded with emails, phone calls, and complaints on social media, Summit County Officials released a statement regarding the performance of the National Anthem at the annual Fair’s Demolition Derby.

Many of those in attendance felt like the performance was disrespectful to our nation and made light of the American Flag.

On the County’s Facebook page, people expressed their frustration.

“In my opinion someone should of had the obligation to walk out and take the mic from this person and apologize to all who were in attendance. Allowing this to go on for the entire rendition of our anthem was not acceptable!!” Steven L. Woolstehulme said.

Shaun Larsen asked, “Was she drunk?”

Majority of the comments criticized the performance, but some applaud the Summit County for their response:

“Thank you, Summit County Fair Board. You are a class act. The Summit County Fair has always been celebrated by my family, and we look forward to attending this year and every year.” Carol France wrote.

Krachel Greenwood, Summit County’s Public Affair Coordinator, told 2News that more than 25,000 people visit the fair, and they are taking full responsibility for the performance.

“It appeared she (the singer) had a solid history. She is from Summit County. We always try to highlight local talent,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood noted the Fair Board has a committee who selects those who sing the National Anthem, and that this particular singer came recommended by word of mouth.

“We don’t have a clear answer on what happened,” Greenwood said. “We are re-evaluating our procedures on how talent is selected, screening mic checks and even paying more attention in the final moments before the performance.”

Greenwood would not deny or confirm whether the performer was intoxicated.

“We are also looking into interference with our microphone system and audio feedback – she claims she couldn’t hear very well.”
