Racing For Rescues Goes Virtual!

Racing for Rescues Logo

This year, Second Chance Pet Adoption is taking its annual Racing for Rescues event virtual! Since there is no way to safely host the 5k run/walk in person, they are conducting a 10-day boredom buster to raise $50,000 or more for stray and abandoned animals! The experience spans April 30-May 9, 2020 and features all sorts of fu'n activities.

Rachel Cronmiller, Development and Communications Manager at Second Chance, is very excited about the events new look, "Though we are saddened at the loss of an opportunity to visit face-to-face with the extensive members of the Second Chance family, our supporters have displayed great enthusiasm for this reimagined event! They've responded so well to this new way to support animals in need while having some safe, socially-distant fun. With over 335 registrants so far, we're thrilled that we've been able to adapt our fundraising plans quickly and successfully and grateful that so many are willing to give stray and abandoned cats and dogs their second chances through this event. Given the virtual format, it allows folks to participate from anywhere and over a span of time rather than a set location/time. We've been overjoyed to welcome participants in distant areas of NC, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, New York, and Pennsylvania!"

The week starts off with a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will get you and your furry friend out of the house and enjoying some fresh air. During the scavenger hunt, send photos along the way, and earn one chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card for every item on the list that you find!

May 3 through May 5 will be a costume contest. You and/or your pets will impersonate a historical figure, celebrity, fictional character, inanimate object, etc for another chance to win.

The last activity will be a run/walk. Use a tracking app like WoofTrax or Runkeeper, you will design your Paw Prints for Pets! Go for a run or walk to create a route shaped like a pet-related concept. Can you figure out how to walk the path of a dog bone? A pawprint?

When asked about coming up with the activities, Rachel explains, "In designing the FURtual challenges, it was important to us that we honor the spirit of the original event by including, at minimum, a basic 5K run and a fun walk. At the same time, we embraced the chance for people to get creative with their paths now that we didn't all have to run/walk the same course, and so the Paw Prints challenge was born; with gyms closed, many of us (and our dogs) are tiring of our routine neighborhood adventures, so plotting out a pet-shaped route motivates us to get off the beaten path, literally! Similarly, the outdoor scavenger hunt offers yet another reason to explore parts of the world that we've always taken for granted, while the indoor scavenger hunt honors those for whom outside (even in the open space of a local park, for example) isn't safe right now and opens up a new way to connect with others through a shared challenge in the safety of four walls. The costume contest is also accessible to all, regardless of physical ability and health status, and welcomes that creative spirit that is really thriving in these times of quarantine!"

Anytime during the week, you can also get the chance to win one of two Fleet Feet gift cards, valued at $100 each. How? Run a 5K or take a fun walk and send in a screenshot from your tracking app. There are so many awesome ways to win while supporting a great cause!

Supporters are also able to raise money for Second Chance through their own unique fundraiser. Each fundraiser can easily build their own fundraising webpage (similar to GoFundMe) and can share the link with friends and family, asking them to support you as you become a hero for the animals. Every dollar raised helps to support the animals. While some of the animals require medical care and surgery, all will incur routine costs such as food ($15-$40 depending on size), vaccinations ($15-20), and dewormer ($12 to over $50 for very large dogs). Additionally, all Second Chance animals are spayed or neutered when adopted, with costs for cats and dogs ranging up to $159. Any funds you raise will allow for Second Chance to help even more homeless dogs and cats in our community to find their forever home!

"We hope the FURtual Racing for Rescues event brings us together... not just for a common cause but for a collective good time and a happy distraction! We can't wait to see the photos roll in and to award all the gift cards at the end!"
