Imurj Launches Year-Long Competition

Imurj is a collaborative art and music space in Downtown Raleigh, designed with the artist and fan in mind. The space allows patrons to create, perform, and engage through their cafe, bar, two stages, art studio, gallery, and production studio. Their most recent endeavor consists of a year-long open mic competition that ends in a record deal.

On February 5, 2020, Imurj launched its open-mic competition. On a weekly basis, around 30 artists perform at Imurj’s Open-Mic Night to win a top ten spot. The Imurj staff will then vote to pick their favorite artist from the evening, and a popular vote will be taken separately. Weekly staff picks alongside the monthly popular vote winner will return for the monthly finals. The winner of the monthly finals will be directly seeded into the December Grand Finals. This process will widdle down hundreds of musicians to just 10 artists for the finals, which will be a separate event with notable judges from the industry.

Paul Voran, Producer & Engineer at Imurj Studios, spoke about this process: “This is all about seeking out raw talent that may have gone unheard without some help, and stepping in to do something positive for our local scene. We’ve seen too many great musicians pack up and move to New York, Nashville, and L.A in the past, and we’d like to help Raleigh give them reasons to stay. ”

The top ten will then compete in a year-end grand final to determine one winner. Imurj will produce, record, and distribute 3 singles for the first place winner alongside cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd.

Their open mic takes place almost every Wednesday night at 7:00 pm. If you or someone you know would like to compete be sure to show up early as the line begins to form at 5:45 pm! Check out the Imurj website for more awesome events.
