In the pilot episode of DC’s Stargirl, we first get to learn more about Stargirl’s background and the Justice Society of America. Before Stargirl, there was Starman and his sidekick, Stripesy. Unfortunately, in the opening battle, we see Starman die and Pat (Stripesy) vows to protect the Cosmic Staff until an honorable wielder comes along. That someone is Courtney Whitmore.

After Starman’s death, Pat Dugan puts his past behind him and lives a normal life. Which includes marrying Courtney’s mother and moving the family to Arizona. Courtney is not happy about the move and his having a tough time making friends at school. She uncovers the Cosmic Staff while snooping around Pat’s boxed things in the basement. The Cosmic Staff is a powerful weapon/device that absorbed stellar energy and used it to create a wide range of abilities, including flight and cosmic energy manipulation.

For the rest of the episode, we see Courtney learning how to use the staff and getting used to her new powers. Courtney has many questions and leans on Pat to help her navigate this new reality. She wonders why the staff chose her and contemplates if Starman was her father. In the end, we are left on a cliffhanger: Courtney is attacked by a rival at the drive-in movie theatre. Luckily, Stripesy comes to the rescue exhibiting an enormous mechanic suit.

I am excited to see where the rest of DC’s Stargirl goes. I loved the relationship between Courtney and Pat, and can’t wait to see Courtney grow as Stargirl. I do hope that more secrets about the Justice Society of America are unveiled as we find out who Courtney’s dad is. DC’s Stargirl premieres Tuesday, May 12 at 9 PM on The CW22.
